Who Told You That? | Escaping the Enemy’s Oldest Lie
The voice you trust is shaping the life you live.
The room was quiet.
No music.
No television.
Just the sound of running water in the bathroom sink.
A man looked into the mirror.
Not because he wanted to...
but because he couldn’t avoid it.
The reflection staring back wasn’t the man he imagined he would become.
More gray than he remembered.
More lines around his eyes.
Dreams that once felt within reach now sat quietly on a shelf somewhere behind him.
He didn’t hear anyone speaking.
Yet the conversation had already begun.
“You’re too late.”
“You wasted your potential.”
“Look at you.”
“You’ll never change.”
“God can use other people... but not you.”
The words felt familiar.
Comfortably familiar.
Almost as though they had been rehearsed for years.
He believed them because he had heard them for so long.
But there was one question he had never stopped to ask.
Who told me that?
The First Lie Was Never About the Fruit
Most people remember the forbidden fruit.
Few remember the question that came afterward.
Adam and Eve had eaten.
The innocence they once enjoyed seemed gone.
For the first time, they hid.
Not because God had abandoned them...
but because shame convinced them He would.
When God called for Adam, He asked:
“Where are you?”
Then came another question that reaches across every generation:
“Who told you that you were naked?”
God wasn’t gathering information.
He was exposing a new authority.
Someone else had begun shaping Adam’s understanding of himself.
That was the real tragedy.
Before sin changed Adam’s behavior...
another voice had already challenged his identity.
The serpent’s strategy was not merely to convince humanity to eat something forbidden.
It was to make humanity question whether God could still be trusted.
The enemy introduced a competing voice into a world that had once known only the voice of its Creator.
And humanity listened.
Every Life Is Being Discipled by a Voice
Whether we realize it or not...
every one of us is listening to someone.
Sometimes it is a parent whose criticism still echoes decades later.
Sometimes it is a teacher.
A bully.
An ex-spouse.
A supervisor.
Social media.
The culture.
Our own failures.
Or the Accuser himself.
The enemy rarely begins by attacking your actions.
He attacks your identity.
Because if he can convince you that you are already defeated...
he may never have to convince you to quit.
You will do it yourself.
“You’re damaged.”
“You’ll never overcome this.”
“You aren’t smart enough.”
“You’ll always struggle.”
“You’re too old.”
“Too far gone.”
The tragedy isn’t merely hearing those voices.
The tragedy is believing they have the authority to define you.
Not Every Thought Deserves Agreement
One of the greatest disciplines of the Christian life is learning that not every thought deserves your trust.
Some thoughts deserve examination.
Others deserve immediate rejection.
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Why must thoughts be taken captive?
Because not every thought is telling the truth.
Some thoughts are accusations.
Some are temptations.
Some are wounds speaking through memory.
Some are lies wrapped in language you have heard for years.
The enemy is patient.
He doesn’t need you to believe every lie.
Only the ones that keep you hiding, hesitating, and doubting the goodness of God.
A thought can feel familiar without being faithful.
It can sound like your own voice while repeating something God never said.
You do not have to accept every thought that enters your mind as a verdict over your life.
You can stop.
Examine it.
Compare it to Scripture.
And ask:
Who told me that?
The Enemy Wants You to Hide
Notice what happened in Eden.
Adam didn’t run toward God.
He hid.
That is what shame does.
It drives us away from the One who can restore us.
“Don’t tell anyone.”
“Stay quiet.”
“Pretend you’re fine.”
“God is disappointed in you.”
“People would reject you if they knew.”
The enemy loves hidden places.
Hidden wounds are harder to heal.
Hidden sin is easier to repeat.
Hidden shame grows louder in isolation.
But throughout Scripture...
God does not pursue people merely to expose them.
He pursues them to restore them.
The voice that says, “Hide,” does not sound like the Shepherd.
The Shepherd says:
“Come to Me.”
Conviction draws you toward God with truth.
Condemnation drives you away from Him with hopelessness.
Learn the difference.
Jesus Restores More Than Forgiveness
Jesus never ignored sin.
But He never allowed sin to become the final identity of the person standing before Him.
To Peter...
He did not say, “Your denial is the truest thing about you.”
He said:
“Feed My sheep.”
To the woman caught in adultery...
He did not join the crowd demanding her destruction.
He said:
“Neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.”
To Zacchaeus...
He did not see only a corrupt tax collector.
He saw a son worth rescuing.
To the thief on the cross...
He did not declare that a lifetime of failure had placed mercy beyond reach.
He said:
“Today you will be with Me in paradise.”
Again and again...
Jesus spoke truth louder than shame.
Grace does not pretend the past never happened.
Grace refuses to let the past have the final word.
Christ does more than forgive sin.
He restores identity.
The Father’s Voice
If you have trusted Christ...
listen carefully.
The Father is not whispering:
“You’re hopeless.”
“You’re unwanted.”
“You have failed too many times.”
“There is no place for you here.”
His Word says:
You are His workmanship.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
His grace is sufficient for you.
Nothing can separate you from His love.
Those are not motivational slogans.
They are declarations from the King.
The question is not whether voices are speaking.
The question is:
Which voice has your agreement?
Operator Doctrine
Operators learn to recognize deception before it becomes destruction.
That principle is spiritual before it is tactical.
Every day, competing voices seek your attention.
One reminds you of your failures.
The other reminds you of your Father.
One points backward.
The other calls you forward.
One speaks fear.
The other speaks truth.
One tells you to hide.
The other calls you by name.
One says your past has disqualified you.
The other says grace has given you a new beginning.
The battle is not merely over your emotions.
The battle is over authority.
Who gets permission to define who you are?
Not every voice deserves access.
Not every opinion deserves authority.
Not every accusation deserves a response.
Not every thought deserves agreement.
An Operator of Everyday Life learns to identify the voice, test the message, reject the lie, and follow the Shepherd.
Return to the Mirror
The water had stopped running.
The room was still.
The man looked into the mirror once more.
Nothing about his reflection had changed.
The gray hair was still there.
The scars remained.
The years had not disappeared.
His circumstances were exactly the same.
But something else had changed.
The voice.
For the first time in years, he recognized that the accusations he had carried were not the voice of God.
“You’re too late.”
“You’re not enough.”
“God is finished with you.”
They had always sounded familiar.
But they had never sounded like the Shepherd.
Another voice now spoke with quiet authority.
“You are My workmanship.”
“My grace is sufficient for you.”
“Fear not, for I am with you.”
“Nothing can separate you from My love.”
The mirror no longer determined his identity.
The Father’s voice did.
Perhaps that is the question the Holy Spirit is asking you today.
Not...
“What have you done?”
Not...
“Why did you fail?”
Not even...
“Where are you?”
But something deeper.
“Who told you that?”
Who told you that you were beyond forgiveness?
Who told you that your mistakes were greater than God’s mercy?
Who told you that your calling had expired?
Who told you that you were too broken to begin again?
Because if the answer is not God...
it does not deserve your agreement.
The oldest weapon of the enemy has never been force.
It has always been deception.
And the freedom God offers has never been found in pretending.
It has always been found in truth.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Not because truth changes your past...
but because it changes the authority you allow your past to hold.
So the next time shame whispers...
the next time fear tells you to hide...
the next time failure tries to rename you...
stop.
Ask one question.
Who told me that?
Then listen carefully.
Because somewhere above the noise...
above the accusations...
above every lie you have ever believed...
the Good Shepherd is still calling His sheep by name.
And His voice...
is the only one worth following.
Operator Prayer
Father,
Thank You that Your voice speaks louder than my shame.
Forgive me for believing words that never came from You.
Teach me to recognize the lies of the enemy before they take root in my heart.
Help me reject every accusation that contradicts Your truth.
Remind me that my identity is not built upon my performance, my past, or the opinions of other people.
It is built upon Jesus Christ.
Today, I choose to listen to Your voice above every other.
Lead me out of hiding.
Lead me into truth.
Lead me into the life You created me to live.
In the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen.
